Your request to majordomo@tamos.gmu.edu:

This could be for any of several reasons:

You might have asked to subscribe to a "closed" list, where all new

You might have asked to subscribe or unsubscribe an address other than
the one that appears in the headers of your mail message.

*The Mini Chris and Dave FAQ*

Dave is a sophmore in college, majoring in Systems Engi-
neering. He is a highly sought after computer consultant
and system installer...a virtual computer commodity in
the Washington DC area. Dave is the secondary manager
of this list. He helps to fix the problems that Chris
causes ;> Dave is a fan of Pearl Jam, but if the truth
be known his heart REALLY leans towards Tori Amos.

Chris, also a sophmore in college, is a Recording Tech/
Broadcast/Production major. He is no where near as rich
as Dave...but he does many musical side projects and
recording gigs. Chris is the head manager of the list,
and takes care of all the day to day running of the list.
Chris has been a fan of Pearl Jam ever since the first
time he heard "Alive" on WHFS. He ran out and bought the
CD the next day ;> Chris has met the band, and has seen
Pearl Jam nine times in concert. He is the REALLY big
fan of the two list managers.

Dave and Chris are both musicians (Dave plays Sax, Chris
plays bass -- you should hear them play "Black" or "Oceans")
and they both are committed to bringing you the best list
they can produce. Running a list of this size has proven
to already be a chore (to put it gently) but since no else
appeared to be picking up the slack for GoS; "Oceans" was
	created.

The list may occasionally be halted due to normal problems
(power outtages, natural disasters, nuclear attack, riots,
a really good concert they have to go see, or their own
tragic personal lives) but they will do their best to keep
things running smooth for everyone. If you have a problem,
	please e-mail them.

If you wish to shower Dave or Chris with gifts for taking
	on this task...email at... (hehe)

Welcome to "Oceans!" Now that you are a subscribed member
take a look at this helpful guide. It's designed to make
you feel more comfortable with what Oceans is about, and
to give you tips on how we can all keep Oceans a friendly,
prosperous and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

	+Disclaimer+

First off, lets get the legal jazz out of the way. The list
owners/managers (Chris Nelson and Dave Storey) are in no way
responsible for messages reflected through Oceans. The
views expressed on Oceans are solely those of the original
authors. That wasn't so painful, and now Dave and I have
completed the 'cover our ass' section.

Please don't pre-judge the following as a bunch of boring
rules. This list is not about censoring anyone. Please
keep an open mind when reading these guidelines; you'll
find them helpful in dealing with newsgroups, forums, and
mailing lists throughout the Internet. This is what many
	call "Proper Netiquette."

+ You don't have to stray, the Oceans away... +

Its exciting to come across a group of fans of your favorite
band and become active on the Internet. But hold your horses
for a sec.! Before you plunge into the discussion, get your-
self a copy of the Pearl Jam FAQ (I'm sure it still has old
GOS references -- pretend it says "Oceans" instead!) and
	read through it.

The FAQ is put together by tremendously loving and helpful
volunteers as a way to compile the universe of puzzling
Pearl Jam lore into one, easily referencable, encompassing
tome. The FAQ is where you can find out what date they played
the Patriot Center, the name of Eddie Vedder's wife, the
ever growing list of drummers, and so much more. Its really
an amazing piece of literature. A Must read for any Pearl
Jam fan. You can download the FAQ and keep a hardcopy on
paper or hard disk, ready for action!

Yes, it *is* long! But you don't need to read it all. Just
skim along and read whatever interests you. This is the
easiest way to keep the same monotonous questions from being
asked on Oceans. The FAQ often times sparks a great discus-
sion, and it's great for a memory jogger.

The FAQ is available at several locations:

	    Via FTP: at mirage.skypoint.com
		 At "login" type: anonymous
At "password" type your e-mail address
Once you're logged in, go to /pub/members/calebl

Via the World Wide Web: in the GOS web page
point your web browser to the following URL:

Via e-mail: Ask on Oceans, and you shall recieve!

	+Other Ways to Avoid Monotony+

	* Read the day's messages or digest (when available) before
you post. See who else is posting and what subjects are
being discussed. If you can answer a question or have an
opinion on something, don't be shy.

	* When you quote other messages, try to attribute the quote
correctly to the author. Always delete "quote-ees" sig files
(those chatty signature boxes and things at the end of other's
	messages).

	* Bootlegs are cool; rumor has it Eddie even makes his own
at each show. Trades though, are between two people and not
the entire list of subscribers of Oceans. You may make your
bootlists available via PRIVATE e-mail or your own site. DO
NOT post your bootleg list on "Oceans." (Its just not a cool
thing to do.) Selling bootlegs is illegal, do not do it on
Oceans. Announcement of CDs, boots, etc for tape trees are
cool, as long as the specifics are carried out via PRIVATE
	e-mail.

+Dive In! Getting Involved on Oceans+

	* Introduce yourself! Oceans welcomes new members! Tell
us who you are, what you do, and how you got into Pearl
Jam. How did you hear about the Oceans list? Have you
seen Pearl Jam live? When/where? We love to read reviews
and hear personal experiences, encounters, and impressions.
It's fun to see how lucky we are to have such a killer bunch
of members. We are all friends here, in our love of Pearl Jam.

+Remaing Cool in the Face of Flames+

"PEARL JAM SUCKS!!!" Someone's goin to say it. Or something
else that upsets us. Maybe you posted a heartfelt interpre-
tation of the song "Release" or "Black" -- and someone called
it stupid. It's tempting to yell back to defend yourself.

	But wait!!!

Take a second to put the situation in perspective. Aren't you
glad you are above childish name calling and vicious negativ-
ity? You don't need to be rude to get your point across.

If you still feel the need to reply, follow these tips:

	* Use +PRIVATE+ e-mail. As it's *you* who is offended, the
reply should be sent by *you* to ONLY the hopeless jerk. NOT
to everyone on the list. If others feel the same way, they
too should send +PRIVATE+ email. Then the original poster
(i.e. Jerky) will find several flames in his mailbox without
the rest of the list being bothered.

	* Learn the command in your mail program that sends a reply
to only the original sender. Note the "auto reply" sends to
the +ENTIRE+ bunch of Ocean subscribers -- not JUST the or-
	iginal sender.

	* When you're sure a reply to flame can be of interest to
others on the list (a different opinion, a good point),
then go ahead and post to the list. But take a moment to
compose your thoughts so the thread becomes a discussion
-- and NOT a flame war.

Here's a recent example: When Pearl Jam played the Voters
For Choice Benefit in Washington D.C., their political
stance generated a great deal of discussion. This is a
good thing. Pearl Jam takes an open stand on many con-
troversial issues, and, naturally, the dwellers of "oceans"
will not always agree with those issues. Many members
feared the Choice/Life discussion would erupt into a flame
war the likes of which no has ever seen. Others thought
the entire discussion was a waste of bandwidth. The dis-
cussion was carried out in an intelligent and respectful
give-and-take (proving that Pearl Jam members on this
mailing list are of only the highest caliber). We were
curious, apprehensive, and hopeful -- all at once -- yet
it provided to be a positive experience for all.

Use expression to win friends and influence people! Maybe
someone posted something you find offensive. You could
go private e-mail, but maybe you want to liven up the dis-
cussion on Oceans with a bit of sarcasm. That's cool with
me! We all enjoy a good laugh. All I ask is that you don't
get mean and nasty. We value friendship and mutual respect
even over wit! Most important, we want the Oceann to be a
	fun place to be.

Sometimes written word can't express emotions like humor,
irony, or grief. Use smileys and abbreviations when you
want to make sure a message is taken in the spirit you
	intended:

	*********************************************************
	*  :)  :-)	= Smiley...happy...sarcasm		*
	*  ;)  ;>	= Winking and smirking...sarcasm	*
	*  :0  :O	= Open mouth - Surprised or Shocked	*
	*  :(  :<	= Frowning...upset or sad		*
	* ROTFL	= Rolling On The Floor Laughing *
	* IMHO = In My Humble Opinion *
	*  BTW		= By the way				*
	*********************************************************

	+and finally...,

	* DON'T SEND A MESSAGE IN ALL CAPS (people perceive this
	as SHOUTING!).

	* That's it! Just enjoy being in the Ocean and treat others
like you expect to be treated. And when all else fails,
	count to ten (or better yet...PLAY IT -- *** LOUD ***) ...
and remember why we are here.

Special thanks to Caleb LaVergne for sending me a rough
copy of the "Oceans" welcome file. It is very similar to the
	GOS file...

To: ALL OCEANS and OCEANS-DIGEST SUBSCRIBERS!

Due to the many problems with OCEANS and OCEANS-DIGEST this mailing list is
going to be temporarily taken off line. I regret having to take such an
action but I am left with NO other alternative currently.

I've spoken with the ROOT at tamos.gmu.edu (I socialized with him last
night) and we continued our discussion on what can be done to keep Oceans
going. We sat down and analyzed the two major problems Dave and I are
facing running this list:

#1 SYSTEM STRESS:
Tamos.gmu.edu is not one of George Mason University's larger servers.
It's "function" is to do some technical crap that I don't understand ;>
As a side function, the root of tamos.gmu.edu has blessed us with the
chance to run a HEY-UGE mailing list from it. Oceans and Oceans digest
produce an INCREDIBLE amount of mail. For every message sent to
"oceans@tamos.gmu.edu" the system immediately turns around and sends that
message back out...to nearly 1,000 people. Figure in an average day of
mail at 40-50 pieces of oceans mail a day, or a heavy day of 100+ messages.
That is between 40-50,000 - 100,000 email messages a DAY. The root at
tamos had never seen the load averages sky rocket like they have in the
past week. We both believe that Oceans is the main cause for this problem.

#2. LIST MANAGER STRESS
As I have detailed in the past few weeks the "pjowner" account is being
flooded with messages. Everytime a user has a full inbox (this is
especially true for our AOL friends who don't check their mail often)
every piece of oceans-mail gets returned to me. Often times, I'll get 300
bounced messages in the matter of moments once a system decides to
"inform" me that a user account has been discontinued, has a full
mailbox...etc. I +have+ to read all these messages....because if there
is some administrative request in the midst of 300 error messages its my
'job' to make sure I don't miss it. We (Dave and I) have tried many
different software programs, but we continue to be unhappy with some
portion of the list and how it operates. During OCEAN'S downtime -- we
will be actively working on finding "THE" software to use for this list.

As I have also said I (Chris) do about 95% of all work on Oceans (not to
say anything bad about Dave -- thats just not in his description) and
with my current schedule (no question the most challenging semester of my
existance) it proves to be neearly impossible to run a list that pleases
everyone, and to handle all the other responsibilities in my life.

One nice subscriber wrote me and thanked me for using my 'relax' time to
run Oceans. Well, because of "Oceans' i see little relax time. With new
software, and maybe a set subscription limit we may be able to recover
brilliantly. The possibilty does exist however that Oceans will end up
being terminated. If that happens, I apologize...but you will be alerted
via one last message to the list.

If the list does continue, everyone will have to be much more considerate
about message quoting, personal email, and many of the time
wasting/annoying messages that subscribers have to dig through. One thing
that has always puzzled me is that someone will say. "Bob@pearl.jam.com,
my email is bouncing to you -- so I'm writing to you through the list."
News flash! If your mail is bouncing to Bob, SO IS MINE! This list is a
brilliant example on how we can really share info, concert stories...etc,
but also a great example that everyonce in a while some one needs to just
say "shut up already" and lets stick to buisness. More and more people
have been writing me personally saying, "Is there anything you can do to
keep all this crap off the list?"...the answer is no. This is not a
moderated list, and I would rather crash OCEANS than moderate it. I
recieve mail saying, "Look at SOY (The +Live+ mailing list, which is a
great one if you like +Live+), they have atleast as many subscribers as
Oceans...and I never see any of this crap on their list." Thats because
it is moderated. Moderated meaning the list manager edits some messages,
and rejects others completely. I'm not picking on SOY by the way, I'm one
of its first subscribers and I like it a lot.

No one wants to have to resort through tredging through the newsgroup to
get waht we get here...but if we are not careful, Oceans can, and is, in
a way, turning into alt.music.pearl-jam. All administrative requests will
be put on hold until OCEANS is either brought back up, or taken down for
good. I will be happy to reply to your personal email -- questions,
comments, flames at: pjowner@tamos.gmu.edu <or> cnelson@tamos.gmu.edu

I would expect Oceans to be down anywhere from a day to a couple of weeks.

My heart is still in this project like it was when I started...I just
can't be happy running the list in the sub-par manner I've been running
it lately.

Stay tuned for more information, and possible updates on alt.music.pearl-jam.

"I'll ride the wave, where it takes me..."
