Dear networker,

Your subscription to list TFTD-L (THOUGHT FOR THE DAY) has been accepted.

You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF TFTD-L" command to
LISTSERV@TAMVM1.BITNET (or LISTSERV@TAMVM1.TAMU.EDU). Please note that this
command must NOT be sent to the list address (TFTD-L@TAMVM1) but to the
LISTSERV address (LISTSERV@TAMVM1).

The amount of acknowledgement you wish to receive from this list upon
completion of a mailing operation can be changed by means of a "SET TFTD-L
option" command, where "option" may be either "ACK" (mail acknowledgement),
"MSGACK" (interactive messages only) or "NOACK".

Please note that it is presently possible for other people to determine that
you are signed up to the list through the use of the "REVIEW" command, which
returns the network address and name of all the subscribers. If you do not wish
your name to be available to others in this fashion, just issue a "SET TFTD-L
CONCEAL" command.

More information on LISTSERV commands can be found in the LISTSERV reference
card, which you can retrieve by sending an "INFO REFCARD" command to
LISTSERV@TAMVM1.BITNET (or LISTSERV@TAMVM1.TAMU.EDU).

Virtually,

   The LISTSERV management

There have been some changes in Thought for the Day - List (TFTD-L) and
some more are coming. Texas A&M is no longer on BITNET. This caused those on
BITNET to miss a few days of TFTD-L at the first of this month.

The UNIX system from which TFTD-L originates is going away and TFTD-L is
moving to TAM2000.tamu.edu.

In addition I will be out of town July 30 - August 6 so TFTD-L will be on
full auto-pilot.

If you have the option of using either a BITNET address or an INTERNET
address you may wish to sign-off the BITNET address and then sign-on from
the INTERNET address.

Remember, nothing is expected to go wrong, go wrong, go wrong, go wrong, go
wrong,... but be prepared.

Your subscription to the TFTD-L list (THOUGHT FOR THE DAY) has been
accepted.

Please save this message for future reference, especially if you are not
familiar with LISTSERV. This might look like a waste of disk space now,
but in 6 months you will be glad you saved this information when you
realize that you cannot remember what are the lists you are subscribed
to, or what is the command to leave the list to avoid filling up your
mailbox while you are on vacations. In fact, you should create a new mail
folder for subscription confirmation messages like this one, and for the
"welcome messages" from the list owners that you will occasionally
receive after subscribing to a new list.

To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list,
just send mail to TFTD-L@TAMVM1.TAMU.EDU. This is called "sending mail to
the list", because you send mail to a single address and LISTSERV makes
copies for all the people who have subscribed. This address
(TFTD-L@TAMVM1.TAMU.EDU) is also called the "list address". You must
never try to send any command to that address, as it would be distributed
to all the people who have subscribed. All commands must be sent to the
"LISTSERV address", LISTSERV@TAMVM1.TAMU.EDU. It is very important to
understand the difference between the two, but fortunately it is not
complicated. The LISTSERV address is like a FAX number, and the list
address is like a normal phone line. If you make your FAX call someone's
regular phone number by mistake, it will be an unpleasant experience for
him but you will probably be excused the first time. If you do it
regularly, however, he will probably get upset and send you a nasty
complaint. It is the same with mailing lists, with the difference that
you are calling hundreds or thousands of people at the same time, so a
lot more people get annoyed if you use the wrong number.

You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF TFTD-L" command
to LISTSERV@TAMVM1.TAMU.EDU. You can also tell LISTSERV how you want it
to confirm the receipt of messages you send to the list. If you do not
trust the system, send a "SET TFTD-L REPRO" command and LISTSERV will
send you a copy of your own messages, so that you can see that the
message was distributed and did not get damaged on the way. After a while
you may find that this is getting annoying, especially if your mail
program does not tell you that the message is from you when it informs
you that new mail has arrived from TFTD-L. If you send a "SET TFTD-L ACK
NOREPRO" command, LISTSERV will mail you a short acknowledgement instead,
which will look different in your mailbox directory. With most mail
programs you will know immediately that this is an acknowledgement you
can read later. Finally, you can turn off acknowledgements completely
with "SET TFTD-L NOACK NOREPRO".

Please note that it is presently possible for anybody to determine that
you are signed up to the list through the use of the "REVIEW" command,
which returns the e-mail address and name of all the subscribers. If you
do not want your name to be visible, just issue a "SET TFTD-L CONCEAL"
command.

More information on LISTSERV commands can be found in the LISTSERV
reference card, which you can retrieve by sending an "INFO REFCARD"
command to LISTSERV@TAMVM1.TAMU.EDU.

Subject: TFTD-L Confirmation / Resubscription Message
To: Multiple recipients of list TFTD-L <TFTD-L@tamvm1.tamu.edu>

As part of the ongoing project to reduce the number of errors received by
TFTD 526 subscribers were requested today to confirm their subscription to
the TFTD-L list. (If you have not received such a notice you will some
time between now and six months from now so read and heed.) Many are
having problems CONFIRMing because the address where the TFTD is being
received is not _identical_ to the address in the TFTD-L list.

D O N O T P A N I C

One easy way to solve the problem is to reSUBscribe to the list from your
present address. You may want to wait until Monday, April 29th to do so
because until the LISTSERV deletes the old address you will receive two
copies of the TFTD.

Request needs to go to LISTSERV@TAMU.EDU and have your name (two parts).
See full directions below:

If you still have problems then send a message to dan.galvin@tamu.edu and I
will add you manually as time permits. Be sure to indicate that you have
tried to SUBscribe or I will just send these instructions to you again. I
would prefer that you send me the response as to why it didn't work so we
can solve the problem as this CONFIRM/reSUBscribe will be something you
will need to do every six months.

I recently sent the following appended to the the tftd. For those of you wanting to subscribe be sure to put the final K on archieK@ix.netcom.com. The one without a K does not have a daily quote and would, understandably so, not wish to receive a subscription request. Thanks, -tftd
