Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII To the members of the guild-annouce mailing list: Thank you for choosing to participate in the Webmasters' Guild! The guildmasters (see below) would like to briefly update everyone concerning the Guild's growth and progress before our next meeting. The Guild's ranks have grown very rapidly since our first meeting; the last time we checked, almost 400 individuals had joined the list, and roughly 40 new people join each day. Guild-announce contains users from 35 different states and 9 foreign countries. Once again, please pass information about the Guild along to anyone interested. We have also received coverage in several trade journals and on-line areas. Moving forward, we are working to maintain and enhance the Guild's original focus: to serve as an open forum for Webmasters to share information, ideas, and technology, and to improve the Web's capabilities, quality, and reach in the future. Our most important short-term mission is to maintain a higly useful level of discussion, both in our monthly meetings and on-line, so that the Guild can grow in a productive manner. Expect several more emails shortly, concerning topics such as establishing general Guild guidelines, soliciting academic and industry support, and expanding the membership. Please be patient as we follow up on these developments and integrate them into the Guild's overall structure. For future reference, the current guildmasters are Matt Cutler, Matthew Gray, Owen Johnson, and Vicki Tardif. Their responsibilities and personal email address are as follows: Meeting organization and coordination - Vicki www.webmaster.org and "threadmaster" - Owen Speaker arrangements and commercial involvement - Matt Web Technical issues & questions - Matthew All messages posted to guild-announce will also appear on the Web site's Thread areas. In order to better focus the discussion, the Thread area has been reorganized into the following major categories: Guild Announcements, Guild Related, Web Issues, Web Technology, and Business Forums. We ask that all discussions occur on the Web site so that they are readily accessible by the entire Guild. Once again, the Guild is growing very rapidly and is gradually taking shape. We are working to ensure that it meets the needs and interests of as many Webmasters as possible. As a reminder, the next Guild meeting will begin at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, July 19th, at MIT room 1-390 (see the Guild Announce thread area for a map of MIT). Also, we will have copies of the WebWeek trade journal for everyone in attendance. We look forward to seeing you! Sincerely, The Guildmasters From guildmaster@netgen.com Wed Jul 19 15:17:52 1995 Reply-To: guildmaster@webmaster.org Subject: Webmasters' Guild: Future Issues Keywords: net.Genesis; net.Form; WWW; Organization: net.Genesis Corp. Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII [We have have been experiencing some problems with posting to the guild-annouce mailing list. We apologize if you have recieved multiple copies of the previous message.] Hello everyone, This message is intended to introduce and address a number of prominent issues surrounding the Guild's future growth. Guild Meeting Speakers: We would like to thank everyone who has offered to donate their services to the Guild! At present, each meeting will contain a 30 minute presentation, followed by a 30 minute discussion session. Depending on the feedback we receive, in the future we can include additional speakers on specific topics, such as Web technology, graphic design, on-line communication, business focus, training seminars, commercial developments, etc. The upcoming meeting will feature representatives from the Boston Globe who will discuss the issues and challenges they faced in creating the Globe's new Web site. If you are interested in speaking at future meetings, please contact Matthew Cutler . Please see the "Guild Related - Forum Suggestions" thread area to discuss meeting presentations further. Academic/Industry Support: Due to recent press and on-line coverage, the Webmasters' Guild has received a great amount of interest from a number of outside groups. We have discussed offers for product presentations, special discounts, sneak previews, and more. While we view this as very positive, we are sensitive about maintaining the Guild's independence and impartiality. Please see the "Guild Related - Guild Expansion" discussion area. Special Interest Groups (SIGs): The possibility of creating SIGs was raised at the last meeting in response to the broad range of interests represented. If Guild members are willing to organize and lead these SIGs, we will supply independent discussion areas for them. Please see the "Guild Related - SIG Suggestions" discussion area. Steering Committee: As previous messages have mentioned, the Guild is growing very rapidly. In order to guide its growth most effectively, we would like to create a relatively small Steering Committe (5-7 people) to lead the effort. In addition to the regular Guild meetings, the Committee will meet at least once a month in the Boston area. If you are interested in participating in the Steering Committe, please contact Owen Johnson . In addition, we welcome the participation and input of other Web- and Internet-related user groups. New Chapters: Many requests have been submitted asking to found new Guild chapters in various regions of the country (and world). While we are grateful for this enthusiasm, we would like to let the Guild develop for several months in the Boston area before it begins expanding. Once the organization has somewhat settled, we can create a solid "Webmasters' Guild Charter"; then we will actively look to bring Guild chapters to other regions. Our intent is to ensure that each chapter upholds the goals of the Guild and serves as a beneficial resource to the area's Webmasters. To discuss this issue further, please see the "Guild Related - Guild Expansion" discussion Thread. Thank you for your support! Sincerely, The Guildmasters
