From @VTBIT.CC.VT.EDU:owner-sec82-l@VTVM1.CC.VT.EDU Thu Sep 8 12:14:49 1994 Reply-To: Michael Leahy Sender: Alpha Phi Omega Section 82 Discussion List Subject: Some general announcements X-To: Section 82 List To: Multiple recipients of list SEC82-L Several people have recently joined this mailing list and have asked some questions... Here's a quick attempt to answer some of them... Please pass this information on to anyone else who might be interested in these discussion lists. 1. What are the different mailing lists that I can join? There are three lists that brothers here in Section 82 most often want to join. a) SEC82-L: this list is intended for discussion among the chapters, petitioning groups, and staff of Section 82. It can also be used to post announcements of events. Currently, there is very little traffic on this list, but the last Sectional Advisory Committee meeting encouraged its greater use. The list's address is 'SEC82-L@VTVM1.CC.VT.EDU'. b) APO-L: this list is intended for discussion among chapters, petitioning groups, alumni, and staff of the entire nation. Many people ask for suggestions or discuss ways to implement policies. Brothers congratulate newly initiated pledges and chapters, and announce projects and conferences that are of regional or national interest. Brothers can ask questions about national policies and procedures; responses, however, are NOT the official answer; for that, you should contact the appropriate sectional, regional, or national volunteer, or the National Office. The list gets a moderate amount of traffic. The list's address is 'APO-L@VM.CC.PURDUE.EDU'. c) APOSOC-L: this list is intended for questions and discussions of a less serious nature. The list gets a heavy amount of traffic. The list's address is 'APOSOC-L@PSUVM.PSU.EDU'. 2. How do I subscribe to one of these lists? Below is a list of the messages that you need to send and the machine you need to send the message to for each of the lists: SEC82-L SUBSCRIBE SEC82-L your name goes here LISTSERV@VTVM1.CC.VT.EDU APO-L SUBSCRIBE APO-L your name goes here LISTSERV@VM.CC.PURDUE.EDU APOSOC-L SUBSCRIBE APOSOC-L your name goes here LISTSERV@PSUVM.PSU.EDU Insert your name or other descriptive text in the space labeled 'your name goes here.' 3. How do I send a message to a list? Just like you'd send a message to any other friend. If you wanted to send a message to the Section 82 list, you'd address it to 'SEC82-L@VTVM1.CC.VT.EDU'. 4. Is there anything we can't talk about on these discussion lists? Yes. These are open to the public, so all discussions of the Ritual and Initiation Ceremonies should be avoided. Offensive topics and rude behaviour should also be avoided (standard rules of netiquette apply). APO-L requests that members restrict themselves to one message introducing themselves; one message welcoming newly inducted pledge classes, officers or chapters; and one message announcing parties, conferences, and other events. You are welcome to post additional messages to APOSOC-L. 5. Is the National Office connected to email? Not yet. People are working hard to get a reliable email connection to the National Office. Several members of the National Board of Directors, however, are subscribed to different lists. 6. Where can I get email addresses for other chapters? The best way to find someone's address is to check the subscription list for the discussion lists. To find out the people subscribed to SEC82-L, send the message 'REVIEW SEC82-L' to 'LISTSERV@VTVM1.CC.VT.EDU'. In a few minutes, you'll get a message with the email addresses of everyone subscribed to the list. NOTE: the message goes to the LISTSERV controlling the list, not to the list itself. In all cases, you would substitute 'LISTSERV' for the name of the list. 7. How can I (or a friend) subscribe to one of these lists? Send the message 'SUBSCRIBE name_of_list your_name_goes_here' to the listserver. This will set up a subscription to your computer account, and all mail that comes to you will be addressed to the name you gave. The name you gave would also show when someone reviews the listing of subscribed members. 8. What do I do when I go away for an extended vacation, or want to leave the list entirely? Send the message 'SIGNOFF SEC82-L' to the listserver if you want to quit from sec82-l. This will totally remove you from the discussion list. You can restart mail by sending the message 'SUBSCRIBE SEC82-L yourname' to the listserver. 9. Where can I find out more information? More information on LISTSERV commands can be found in the LISTSERV reference card, which you can retrieve by sending an 'INFO REFCARD' command to 'LISTSERV@VTVM1.CC.VT.EDU'). --Michael Michael Leahy, Programmer/Analyst michael.leahy@vt.edu Educational Technologies, Virginia Tech leahymr@vtvm1.cc.vt.edu Blacksburg, Virginia 24061-0232 leahymr@vtvm1 (bitnet) 703-231-3272 703-231-5922 (fax) From owner-APO-L@vm.cc.purdue.edu Thu Sep 8 17:48:29 1994 Subject: You are now subscribed to the APO-L list To: Adam Rifkin Reply-To: APO-L-Request@vm.cc.purdue.edu X-Lsv-Listid: APO-L Thu, 8 Sep 1994 19:44:29 Your subscription to the APO-L list (Alpha Phi Omega) has been accepted. The list will provide an opportunity for members to compare notes on their chapters, discuss organizational issues and communicate with members at distant chapters. APO-L is an unofficial list and the postings reflect the opinions of individuals and not the official policy of Alpha Phi Omega. Please read them. If you have any questions, please contact the list coordinator. The guidelines are derived from network policies, netiquette and input from subscribers to the list coordinator. 1. When first subscribing to APO-L, please feel free to post a brief (about a screen's worth) message about yourself to introduce yourself to the list. Please use private e-mail to respond to someone's introduction. Please do not send your reply to APO-L as it will then be sent to the entire list. 2. APO-L makes a concerted effort to keep network traffic and "junk mail" to a minimum, since there are many subscribers receiving APO-L through their place of work or pay services such as Compuserve or MCI Mail. All postings should be related to Alpha Phi Omega. 3. Netiquette dictates private responses to private email. Please do not post private mail to APO-L, EVEN IF YOU CANNOT FIND A MAILING PATH. Contact your local postmaster or the list coordinator for if you need help. List subscribers can also be found on the APO-L subscriber list using the REV command. 4. Please do not "flame" (insult) individuals over APO-L or in private mail. Discussions will naturally bring disagreements, however, rebuttals should always be made in a rational, logical and mature manner in public or private. 5. Please refrain from using any language that might be considered questionable (even by the most conservative of us) on APO-L. 6. The chartering of a new chapter should be announced once by either a representative of the new chapter or the assisting chapter. Congratulations (which are definitely in order) should be sent via PRIVATE e-mail. 7. Newly initiated pledge classes may also be announced by a single representative. Again, congratulations and good wishes should be sent via PRIVATE e-mail. 8. Invitations to events should only be posted once, unless there is a change to the original announcement. Arrangements to attend an event should be made via private email and not across APO-L. 9. Subscription to APO-L is *not* limited to active brothers. Please do not discuss any rituals or confidential matters of the fraternity on APO-L. 10. Most of the points above can be summarized by: Keep in mind the principles which Alpha Phi Omega was founded on and be courteous to the members of this list. Thank you for adhering to these guidelines. Although APO-L may not be the most active of mailing lists, following them will insure that the majority of people subscribed can and will stay involved. APO's national offices are located at: Alpha Phi Omega 14901 E. 42nd Street Independence, MO 64055 USA (816) 373-8667 ::MESSAGE LOGS APO-L communications are logged weekly. I wasn't sure if this wouyld 'fit' into the guidelines for APO-l >(I'm new at this) so I thought I'd post. Thanks for your time. Good question, if you're trying to find info from another chapter or the email address of someone at another chapter: Take a look at the list of APO-L subscribers and see if you can locate someone from the chapter or the person you are looking for. Then you can just handle things in personal mail. You can get a copy of the APO-L subscribers list by sending the command: REVIEW APO-L to LISTSERV@VM.CC.PURDUE.EDU If you can't get the information you need from that then go ahead and send a message to the list.
