ABOUT NJ SPEAKOUT! The Republican led quick march to the far right from Trenton to Washington DC, and the feeble response from the loyal opposition Democrats is being celebrated in the corporate media and in corporate board rooms internationally ... Meanwhile, an undercurrent of people are sincerely worried about the directions and decisions being made ever so swiftly, about the meanness and the flirtations with racial politics. People throughout New Jersey are looking for some place to turn, for some hope that the future holds a place for them. You hear their voice of desperation and see their well articulated appeals in the news opinion pages. Where can we go to articulate a new direction for our towns, counties, state, and nation? How can we find out what our neighbors are doing to stand up for our freedoms? What is being done to defend the hard earned gains of labor, women, African Americans, Latinos, and poor and working people, and to protect our air and water? What are the motivations behind tax reform, welfare "reform", cutbacks, privatization, deregulation, and immigrant bashing? The place to turn is the new on-line interactive computer discussion NJ-SPEAKOUT! We will serve as a clearing house for New Jersey dialogue on where to go for those truly sincere about reversing corporate control of our lives. Our focus will be the common, poor, middle class, and working people of New Jersey. We will help to organize and mobilize our forces for a fightback like this state has never seen before. Some of the areas of discussion will be: * How will the "contract for America" affect New Jerseyans and how can we most effectively resist it? How will the lay offs of public workers and the selling off of public assets affect us? * How will Whitman's and Gingrich's pro-industry deregulation and anti-environmental policies affect the safety and health of our communities and workplaces? What are grass roots organizations doing about such measures? What is being done about the siting of dangerous facilities in our neighborhoods? * What independent people's political initiatives are afoot in our towns and counties? * How prevalent are the death squads within the so-called "pro- life" movement and what are women's organizations doing to defend the health care choices of women? * Will the crime initiatives curtail crime or simply waste billions on more prisons, and what are the implications to African Americans now that more than 64% of the prisoners in New Jersey are Black? How much will the new additions on Rahway prison and other New Jersey penitentiaries cost New Jersey taxpayers? * What about the attacks on public education, including privatization, tuition tax credit (in Jersey City), and state takeover in Newark? How will these plans affect a system that is already failing? These and other TOPICs will be covered in this people's debate. People who are now unable to log-in and need 'HOW TO' info or want to make hard-copy posts to the dialogue, write to NJ SPEAK OUT!, PO Box 1214, Belle Mead, NJ 08502. It's been a long time coming, but we know, change has got to come! _._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._ From: Bob Witanek (by way of cassidy@panix.com (Michael Cassidy)) The VAL-FAQ can be found onthe VAL home-page: http://www.io.com/user/jbay From Majordomo-Owner@igc.apc.org Sun Mar 5 05:10:43 1995 Subject: Majordomo results Reply-To: Majordomo@igc.apc.org -- >>>> subscribe NJ-SPEAKOUT Your request to Majordomo@igc.apc.org: subscribe nj-speakout adam at xent dot com (Adam Rifkin) has been forwarded to the owner of the "nj-speakout" list for approval.
