But do you know the TOP500 List of installed Supercomputers in the world ????????? The TOP500 Supercomputer list will be published on a regular basis starting 01.July.1993. !!!!!!!!! ****************************************************************** ****************************************************************** To give you a flavour about the upcoming TOP500 List, we have attached a tentative TOP200 List at the end, which includes our present entries with R_max > 600 MFLOPS. As this competition cannot become a success without your support, please -- check entries you know and -- e-mail to us any additional installation you know. to top500@rz.uni-manheim.de Thanks a lot. ****************************************************************** ****************************************************************** ------------------- Background and Objectives ------------------ Some 100 million computers are estimated to be used woldwide: from PCs worth a few 100 Dollars to CRAY YMPs worth more than 20 Million Dollars. But where are the most powerful ones? Where are the TOP500? There is no doubt that only Supercomputers are candidates for the TOP500 list. Until a few years ago, those supercomputers (say FORMULA-1 computers) were manufactured by just a few suppliers, i.e. CRAY Research, CDC, Fujitsu, Hitachi and NEC. With the arrival of highly parallel computers everything has changed. Supercomputer statistics have been published in the past, for example by Ian Duff, Raul Mendez, Sverre Jarp. During the Mannheim Supercomputer Seminar we have published Supercomputer-FORMULA-1 statistics each year since 1986. It has become more and more difficult to decide and define about FORMULA-1: who belongs to FORMULA-1 and who does not. Last year CONVEX made some trouble, since they didn t like the idea that their CONVEX 38xx series didn t belong to FORMULA-1 but they figured out some CRAY XMP s did belong to FORMULA-1. For not having these problems of separation every year, we came to the conclusion that statistics like the one in Mannheim cannot be continued. So we decided to start anew, influenced by the famous FORBES 500 lists ( 500 richest men in the wold, etc. ). Since we are sportive men - at least we believe so! - we like competition very much as long as it is not taken too seriously! ***************************************************************** Now the following questions arise which have to be answered: ***************************************************************** ------------------------ Question 1: ------------------------ What is the performance measure to serve as a yardstick fo the competition? Answer: Rmax in Table 3 of the LINPACK publication of Jack Dongarra. Comment: Of course there will be a lot of people worrying about this measure but on the other hand it s a compromise and it s available for a pretty large number of highly parallel systems - MPP systems and also MP-Vector Computers. On the other hand if Rmax is not available a good first approach is the performance figure of TPP 1000x1000, again from the LINPACK publication. ------------------------ Question 2: ------------------------ What are the figures to be listed in the TOP500 list? Answer: e.g.: - Computer installed Kendall Square Research KSR1-32 - Installation site University of Mannheim - Year of installation 1992 - Area of application Academic - Number of processors 32 - Rmax [Mflop/s] 893 - Nmax [order] 6144 - N 1/2 [order] 896 - Rpeak [Mflop/s] 1280 ------------------------ Question 3: ------------------------ How should the list be ordered? Answer: The list should be ordered by Rmax. ------------------------ Question 4: ------------------------ What is the benefit of a TOP500 list? Answer: It is the true FORMULA-1 list worldwide. There is no need to define every year which computer belongs to FORMULA-1. If a faster computer comes up it is introduced automatically in the list and a slower one disappears. One can benefit from answering interesting questions, e.g.: - How often is Cray Research represented in the TOP500 list? - How many Universities are represented in the TOP500 list? - What is the distribution per countries? - What are the changes in the market? - MPPs versus MP-Vectors ..... etc., etc. ------------------------ Question 5: ------------------------ Who will maintain the TOP500 list and make the necessary evaluations? Answer: The Computing Center of the University of Mannheim is prepared to take over this work. ------------------------ Question 6: ------------------------ How do we recruit input for our TOP500 list? Answer: - Everybody is invited to contribute by e-mail to top500@rz.uni-mannheim.de. The data as in question 3 should be provided. Rmax 300 MFlops is like a minimum requirement as we learned from our TOP50 list in Germany. - A first tentative list for TOP500 with 200 entries is accessible to everybody by: anonymous ftp on ftp.uni-mannheim.de in the directory: pub/top500. - Deadline: Input for the first offical TOP500 list to be published June 24, 1993 during the Opening Session of Supercomputer 93 Seminar in Mannheim is June 15, 1993. This first official list is accessible by July 1, 1993. ****************************************************************** ****************************************************************** beta - TOP200 List ( only entries with R_max > 600 MFLOPS are shown ) !!!!!!!
